Project Management Definitions – Part 11

Recurring task

A task that will occur several times during the life of a project.  Regular project team meetings or quarterly inspections are examples of recurring tasks

Regulation

Requirements imposed by a governmental body.  These requirements can establish product, process, or service characteristics, including applicable administrative provisions that have government mandated compliance

Requests for information (RFI)

A type of procurement documents where by the buyer request a potential seller to provide various pieces of information related to a product or service or seller capability

Request for proposal (RFP)

A type of procurement documents used a request proposals from prospective Sellers all products or services.  In some application areas, it may have an error or more specific meaning

Requests for quotation (RFQ)

A type of procurement documents used a request price quotations from prospective Sellers of common or standard products or services.  Sometimes used in place of request for proposal and in some application areas, it may have a narrower or more specific meaning

Requested change

A formally documented change request that is submitted for approval to the integrated change control process

Requirement

A condition or capability that must be met or possessed by a system, product, service, or result, or components to satisfy a contract, standard, specification, or other formally imposed document.  Requirements include the quantified and documented needs, warrants, and expectations of the sponsor, customer, and other stakeholders

Requirements traceability matrix

The table that links requirements to the origin and traces then throughout the project lifecycle

Reserve

A provision in the project management plan to mitigate cost and/or schedule risk.  Often used by the modifier such as management reserve, contingency reserve, to provide further details on what types of risk are meant to be mitigated

Reserve analysis

An analytical technique to determine the essential features and relationships of components in the project management plan to establish a reserve for the schedule duration, budget, estimated costs, or funds for a project

Residual risk

A risk that remains after risk responses have been implemented

Resource

Skilled human resources, specific disciplines either individually or in cruise or teams, are quick meant, services, suppliers, commodities, material budgets, or funds

Resource breakdown structure

A hierarchical structure of resources by resource category and resource type used in resource leveling schedules and to develop resource limited schedules, and which may be used to identify and analyse project human resource assignments

Resource calendar

A calendar of working days and non working days that determines those dates on which each specific resource is are idle or can be active.  Typically defines resource specific holidays and resource availability periods

Resource driven

A task used timing is determined by the number of resources assigned to it

Resource histogram

The bar chart showing the amount of time the resources schedule to work over a series of time periods.  Resource availability may be depicted as a line for comparison purposes

Contrast in bars may show actual amounts of resources used as the project progresses

Resource leveling

Any the form of schedule network analysis in which scheduling decisions via start and finish dates are driven by resource constraints for example limited resource’s availability or difficult to manage changes in resource’s availability levels

Resource board

A pall of resources created in a centralized location for multiple project managers can access assigned to the project’s

Result

An output from performing project management processes and activities.  Results include outcomes for example integrated systems, revised process, restructured organization, tests, trained personnel, and documents such as policies, plans, studies, procedures, specifications, and reports

Rework

Action taken to bring or defective or non-conforming components into compliance with requirements or specifications

Risk

An uncertain event or condition that, if it occurs, affects the schedule or another project objective such as cost, resources, or performance

Risk acceptance

A risk response planning technique that indicates that the project team has decided not to change the project management plan to deal with the risk, or is unable to identify any other suitable response strategy

Risk avoidance

A risk response planning technique for a threat that creates changes to the project management plan that are meant to either eliminate the risk or to protect the project objectives from its impact

Risk breakdown structure (RBS)

A hierarchically organized depiction of the identified project risks arranged by risk category and sub categories that identifies the various areas and causes of potential risks.  The risk breakdown structure is often tailored to specific project types
